NanOmega3: Omega 3 Nutrition Made Easy!
Essential fatty acids (EFA) are good fats that can only be obtained in the diet. These fatty acids not only provide fuel but also effect many biological processes such as inflammation, immune and brain functions, and blood lipid levels (triglycerides).
There are two families of EFAs: omega-3 and omega-6. The dietary balance between these two EFAs strongly affects their functions. An optimal dietary balance of omega-6 to omega-3 may be 3:1 or even lower. The Standard American Diet (S.A.D.), rich in omega-6 vegetable oils (corn, safflower,) and saturated fats, is 10:1 or higher!
The World Health Organization (WHO) and the American Heart Association (AHA) recommend we consume much more omega 3 fatty acids, while cutting down on omega-6 EFAs, trans fat (hydrogenated), saturated fat, cholesterol and fried fats.
The main sources of omega 3 fatty acids in the American diet include fish, flaxseed and walnuts. Other good, but less common sources include pumpkin, chia and hemp seeds, canola oil, avocado and blue-green algae (spirulina/ chlorella). Grass fed livestock are also much higher in omega-3 fats than grain fed domestic livestock.
Therefore, when it comes to a healthy omega 3/6 EFA balance, it is difficult for most Americans to eat a balanced diet. Because of this, many health professionals recommend omega 3 dietary supplements and consuming the new "functional foods" now being fortified with omega-3 EFAs.
Optimum Vegan Omega-3 from Flaxseed and Marine Algae
Omega-3 fatty acids molecules come in short chains and long chains. The short chain omega-3 is called alpha- linolenic acid (ALA) and its richest source by far is flaxseed. The long chain omega-3s are called EPA and DHA. Their richest source is marine algae (DHA), plankton and the fish that eat them. Both are important for optimal health. It is generally recommended that at the very least 1-2% of the total calories eaten comes from omega-3 fatty acids which is equal to a very minimum of 500- 1,000 mg of omega-3 a day.
One serving of NanOmega3 supplies a minimum of 1,000 mg of ALA omega-3 a day, plus a minimum of 100 mg of DHA from marine algae. ALA can be converted to EPA, though rates vary. A 20% conversion rate would mean a serving of NanOmega3 provides the equivalent of 300 units EPA/ DHA a day. Dietary recommendations for the long chain EPA/DHA omega-3 vary from a low of 160 to a high of 650 mg a day. Therapeutic doses may be even higher.
“Both omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids are essential... omega-6 are significantly more inflammatory... This necessitates that omega-3 and omega-6 be consumed in a balanced proportion; the ideal ratio of omega-6:omega-3 being from 3:1. Typical Western diets provide ratios of between 10:1 and 30:1 - i.e., dramatically skewed toward omega-6.” Simopoulos AP, Cleland LG (eds): "Omega-6/omega-3 Essential Fatty Acid Ratio: The Scientific Evidence." World Rev Nutr Diet. Basel, Karger, 2003, Vol 92.
DHA: Vitally Important for Heart, Brain and Eye Health.
Most of the DHA in sea animals originates in single celled marine plants called microalgae and concentrates in animals as they move up the food chain. These animals also convert some DHA to EPA.
Like EPA and ALA, DHA supports cardiovascular health and anti- inflammatory balance. However, only DHA is vitally important for brain, nerve and eye health as well.
Isolated from marine microalgae under tightly controlled manufacturing conditions, Life's DHA™ omega-3 is from an environmentally sustainable and vegetarian plant source, free of oceanic contaminants that may be present in certain fish or fish oil sources of omega-3's.
“Supplementation with purified DHA increases LDL particle size, reduces serum triglycerides, and increases HDL2 cholesterol, as well as improves vascular function and blood pressure.” Woodman, RJ et. al. Docosahexaenoic Acid But Not Eicosapentaenoic Acid Increases LDL Particle Size in Treated Hypertensive Type 2 Diabetic Patients, Diabetes Care 26:253, 2003*
Meadow Pure™ Organic Flax
Flaxseed is by far the richest readily available plant source of omega-3 fatty acids. However, immature and damaged seeds are more likely to oxidize, leading to rancidity. By separating immature and damaged seeds, coupled with a selective purchasing policy, and special nitrogen sealed packaging, the patented MeadowPure™ process helps us to guarantee the stability, freshness and flavor of our NanOmega3 products under normal, ambient storage conditions.
Organic flax seeds also provide powerful antioxidants, special phytonutrients lignans), along with soluble and insoluble fiber, protein and trace minerals. Indeed, the very high antioxidant acid content of flaxseeds allows them to act as an additional natural freshness stabilizer for Martek’s Vegan DHA!
For vegan vegetarians who consume no fish or animal food sources whatsoever, increasing their intake of dietary ALA (omega-3) and concomitantly reducing their intake of LA (omega-6) ...can be expected to provide for a moderately better metabolic conversion of ALA to the longer-chain omega-3 fatty acids (EPA/DHA). In addition, algal sources of DHA have recently become available which, when taken as supplements or via fortified foods...can provide a non-animal source of DHA.” Conquer, J.A., and Holub, B.J. Docosahexaenoic acid (omega-3) and vegetarian nutrition. Vegetarian Nutrition: An International Journal. 1: 42-49, 1997.
Due to increased awareness of the scientific evidence of these benefits, flaxseed now qualifies for several FDA approved structure function claims, including but not limited to:
- "Promotes cardiovascular health,"
- "Supports the immune system," and
- "Promotes general health."
“Flax is a potent source of lignans.... studies suggested that they may interfere with the development of breast, prostate, colon, and other tumors in humans.” * Journal of the National Cancer Institute. Vol. 86 No.23. December 7, 1994 pg. 1748
Synergistic Vitamins: B6, Folic Acid, B-12, E & D3 + SuperSorb®
Extra antioxidants from Vit. E are recommended when supplementing with EFAs. Vitamin E succinate may act synergistically with flax’s naturally occurring phytonutrient antioxidants like gamma tocopherol and lignans in supporting breast and prostate health.*
As eating fish is a major source of Vit. D3, 400 IU/ serving have been added. Vit. D is important for strong bones and teeth and a healthy immune system.*
Vitamins B6, B9 (Folic Acid) and B12, are added to support energy metabolism, conversion of ALA to EPA, and to help insure against deficiency. And our SuperSorb® Enhanced Delivery Systems help make sure you get the maximum benefit out of every scoop.

NanOmega3®
Nutrition Science on EFA, EPA, DHA, ALA, Flax & Vitamins D, E, B6, B12 & Folate*
"Getting flax in your daily diet is as important as brushing your teeth or taking your multivitamin" David Williams, DC, Editor, Alternatives® Health Technology Report. “Essential fatty acids (EFAs) are long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids that are essential for health and are classified commonly into omega-3 and omega-6 families. The omega-3 family includes alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), while the omega-6 family includes linoleic acid (LA), gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), dihomogammalinolenic acid (DGLA), and arachidonic acid (AA). The North American population consumes in excess of LA and AA but not enough of omega-3 EFAs. Due to modern life style and dietary habits, LA is not metabolized properly leading to a functional deficiency of GLA and DGLA. DGLA produces anti-inflammatory, vasodilatory and anti-aggregatory eicosanoids while AA produces pro-inflammatory, vasoconstrictor, and pro-aggregatory eicosanoids. Excess of AA may be contributing to many of the health problems common to North American society. A change in dietary habits to include more fruits and vegetables and the elimination of processed foods can correct this imbalance; however, changing dietary habits is a most difficult act. EFAs can be supplemented as capsules but many people do not want to take them. Fortification of food with EFAs provides an excellent opportunity as more people are buying foods that offer healthy choices. At the same time, people do not want to sacrifice taste.” - Essential Fatty Acids and Functional Foods. Rakesh Kapoor, Bioriginal Food & Science Corp., Canada

Nutritional Benefits of Flax (66 KB)
Understanding the composition of flax helps in recognizing its value in a healthy diet. The physical descriptors of flax or linseed, as it is sometimes called, distinguish it from other major oil seeds such as canola and sunflower. The following discussion provides a basis for considering the health benefits of flax.
Flax Primer (128 KB)
Flaxseed is rich in ALA, a short chain omega3 that can be converted somewhat into the long chain EPA. However, its conversion to the long chain DHA is poor. A vegan marine algae source (non fish) DHA has been added to NanOmega3 because of its many unique benefits as outlined in this abstract published in Pharmological Research.
The Health Benefits of DHA (20 KB)
DHA supplementation is usually indicated in any one who does not eat fish regularly. NanOmega3™ is especially important for pregnant and nursing women and infants. It helps supply the DHA their diet may lack. Supplementation with a biologically equivalent DHA oil increased DHA blood levels in pregnant women1 and in the milk levels2,3 and blood levels of lactating women3 or their babies.2 This may help support structural development of their babies' brain and eyes.

Organic and Vegan Ingredients with Vitamins E, D, B6, B12 & Folic Acid: It's an Omega3 Super Food Made Easy!
NanOmega3, Golden Flax, Vegan DHA and Synergistic Vitamins is a unique formulation supplying omega 3 fatty acids both as ALA from organic flaxseed and DHA from marine algae (not fish). This unique addition of DHA to the flax is very important as the short chain omega 3 alpha linolenic acid (ALA) can be moderately well converted to the long chain EPA, but ALA is very poorly converted to DHA, so important to eye, brain and heart health. NanOmega3 is the first functional food powder mix to provide multiple flaxseed benefits, while supplementing DHA at the same time.
While supplementing with fish oil is a reasonable supplemental alternative to eating fish, NanOmega3 provides many advantages over fish oil, whether taken by pill or spoon.

FAQ
NanOmega3®
Q. Can I take both NanoEPA DHA and NanOmega 3?
Yes, most persons can, as adding NanOmega3 increases your total omega-3 intake, especially ALA, as well as extra vitamins, minerals, fiber and an especially absorbable delivery form of the beneficial herb, turmeric. For general wellness, ˝ tsp of NanoEPADHA and one scoop of NanOmega3 should suffice. Please check with your health professional if you need further direction.
Q. How are the vitamins “synergistic”?
In addition to the two answers above, B vitamins are important in the conversion of ALA to EPA and DHA. B vitamins also support brain and heart health, in particular by helping to lower a pro-inflammatory substance called homocysteine.
Q. How is NanOmega3 better than fish oil?
NanOmega 3 is a much more complete nutrient than plain fish oil. It is far richer in vitamins, fiber, antioxidants, and phytoestrogens. NanOmega 3 is a vegan product, made from organic ingredients, from an environmentally sustainable source, free of oceanic pollutants. There are no pills to swallow or objectionable tastes, and no resultant “fish burps” Learn more here.
Q. Is NanOmega 3 organic?
Yes, NanOmega3is made with “certified organic ingredients” which by definition means greater than 70% organic. NanOmega3 is non- GM0, and additive and preservative free.
Q. Is NanOmega 3 safe for children?
Yes. As soon as children have enough teeth to chew food, presuming no medical conditions warranting food avoidance or prescription drug use, they may enjoy up to a scoop a day, though ˝ scoop is usually enough support for most children. As children approach puberty up to two scoops may be enjoyed, though one scoop will usually suffice. If you have concerns, please consult your family health provider.
For infants, it is likely being breast feed by a mother who is enjoying two scoops a day is the best advice, presuming the OBGYN concurs.
Q. Is NanOmega3 soy free?
NanOmega 3 contains lecithin as soy as part of our patented SuperSorb® liposome which enhance the absorption of select, otherwise poorly bioavailable ingredients.
Q. What are lignans?
Lignans are a phytonutrient (plant nutrient) of the classification known as polyphenols. They act like weak estrogens and are therefore called phytoestrogens. Lignans are also powerful antioxidants. The lignan content is likely one reason why flaxseed consumption is thought to support the health of the breast, prostate and colon.
Q. What is the SuperSorb® Enhanced Delivery System?
SuperSorb ® Enhanced Delivery Systems currently include:
- using forms of phytonutrients and zoonutrients that are more bioavailable.
- using forms of vitamins or minerals that are more bioavailable
- using micro-encapsulation to make ingredients more bioavailble.
Learn more here.
Q. Which should I take, NanOmega 3 or NanoEPA DHA?
Of course, it is best to have your health professional decide for you. Nonetheless, in general, NanOmega3 might better if you want a satisfying meal (mixed with NanoGreens and/ or NanoReds and NanoPro), especially for maximum fiber, nutrition, weight loss and balanced blood sugar diets. It is also a good choice if you are a vegan, or if you already eat fatty fish once or twice a week. If you desire mega doses of EPA/DHA for nutritional support because you are concerned with arthritis, coronary vascular disease or dementia risk, several teaspoons daily of NanoEPADHA might be preferred, especially if you eat very little fatty fish (salmon, tuna, trout, sardines, anchovies). Of course, if you like things simple, NanoEPADHA can be taken straight by the spoon.
Q. Why Don’t You Use Methylcobalamin in NanOmega 3?
The amount of research done with cyanocobolamin exceeds that of methylcobalamin by 40 times. While there are a few uses of methylcobalamin that are not found for cyanocobalamin, the reverse is true, and cyanocobalamin leads by a wide gap. Moreover, cyanocobalamin is converted to its active forms, first hydroxocobalamin and then methylcobalamin and adenosylcobalamin in the liver.
Q. Why natural Vitamin D3?
Vitamin D3, cholecalciferol, is generally agreed to be twice as bioavailable as vitamin D2, ergocalciferol. Fish is the best source of vitamin D in the diet, followed by Vit D2 fortified milk. Therefore 100% of the DV of vitamin D was added to this vegan formula. Vit D is not only important for strong bones, but also breast and prostate health and a strong immune system. Most authorities think that many of us not living in the warm sunny southern parts of the USA do not get enough vitamin D, especially if we are dark skinned or don’t get moderate but regular sun exposure.
Q. Why natural Vitamin E Succinate?
Natural vitamin E, derived from foods, is thought to be twice as bioavailable as synthetic vitamin E, derived from oil. Because polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) like omega 3 and omega 6 are easily oxidized in the body, extra vitamin E should always be taken with EPA/ DHA supplements. The succinate form is thought to be most protective of breast and prostate health.
Q. Why not just take flaxseed?
Although flaxseed has many benefits, its major drawback is that the short chain omega-3 fatty acids are not well converted to the all important long chain fatty acid DHA, which is so important for brain and eye health. NanOmega 3 provides 100 mg DHA per serving, not from fish, but from the micro-algae fish it, the very source! Plus NanOmega 3 also provides synergistic vitamins (E, D, B6, B12 & folate)and 70 mg of high-antioxidant turmeric. Perhaps most important, ready to mix NanOmega 3 is absolutely delicious!
